Missing snow biker Kingfisher area - Mutual aid with Shuswap SAR

Vernon Search and Rescue Helicopter Winch Rescue team on board a BC Air Rescue helicopter located and rescued a snow biker at 7:30 a.m. after the man spent the night outside in the Shuswap backcountry.

The rescue happened five miles southeast of Sicamous, in the Morton Peak area. The young Vernon man went missing January 16th, 2017 while out snow biking with a group of friends. Vernon and Shuswap Search and Rescue volunteers spent the night on snowmobiles and snowshoes searching through steep and dangerous terrain for the man.

Late that night, the search team followed his track to the edge of a cliff and could not proceed further. It was decided that the teams would regroup and continue the search by chopper the next morning. At daybreak, he was quickly located, winched up aboard the Air Rescue helicopter, and flown to the medical clinic at Silver Star Mountain Resort.

He had driven over a cliff and was uninjured, but cold from his night out in the snow. The machine was damaged in the fall and will likely be airlifted out under contract to the owner.

Vernon Search and Rescue reminds backcountry users to always have survival gear on their person, never travel alone, and always have redundant communications gear.
